Re: VOIP Experiences

We just started using skype as we are out of the country.

$18 for a phone number for 3 months and something like $0.02/min for calls and it comes with voice mail.

The big issue with VOIP systems is you need an internet connection that isn't data limited. You can get away with an occasional call using a cellular data card but if you are conducting buisness with lots of calls, it can get expense (though not as bad as $1-2min international calls).

Currently we are in an apartment with unlimited wifi, so it works great.

If you use a low bandwidth codec, a voice call uses very little data - perfectly suitable for a 1gig allowance or even less.

I use only about 0.4 megabytes per minute using G.729.

That sort of works but skype wants to use your computer as a node in it's network so even if you aren't calling, it may be chewing thru data.

If we want to leave it up so we can get incoming calls, there isn't much we've figured out to avoid it.

Really? I can't quite imagine how that would work. Need to check on that - if it's true, an uninstall may be in order. Do you have links?

We ran into this a couple years ago when we went thru 2 gig of data in 2 days and we weren't doing anything that should have used that much data.

It's called a super node. At the time it was a real pain to shut it off as it was a secondary program running in the background that started up automatically. It basically made your computer the server that relays the calls when your data connection wasn't doing anything else. If it was workng properly, you never noticed it, which would be fine on an unlimited connection but on a pay per byte connection...

On looking for a link, I notice my info may be out of date a bit. It looks like they may have discontinued the super node system.

Re: VOIP Experiences

We use Skype while on the road. If my wife is in China there are often drops and artifacts in the sound quality. Japan and Korea work well...India not so much. All of Europe seems reliable. Given that these calls are made from commercial hotels, better results are obtained if a LAN cable is used in combination with a WiFi repeater in the room. Apple FaceTime also occasionally works as well.

I'd be interested in the details on that too.

In my case I rarely actually run Skype so not a big issue. I just use the call forwarding service mostly.
