VHF license

My VHF radio ship station license expired in 2004 and I didn't renew it because it was no longer required. FCC tells me that if I go abroad I need a new license. Do I really need it? Does any country require/check VHF radio license?

Yes, some do and most all require one. You might never need to show it but it's not going to help if they ask and you don't have one. The FCC really does not care if you have one but only they can give you one that other countries will honor. You can do it all on line now and even use a credit card.

It's required as Paul stated, but we've never been asked by officials in either the US, Canada, or Mexico for the license. Not to say that they wouldn't as soon as we entered/transmitted without it. I'm of the belief that we're guests in the other countries, and if a license is required, we'll have it. Should you obtain the FCC license, it's advised that you check all the boxes for equipment that you may eventually obtain... or not obtain. It'll save $$ should you add radar, a SSB, EPIRB, etc. later on. We also obtained the restricted operator's permits.

G'day, mates. Have never been asked to show my VHF license. The authorities have enough on their hands to worry about. I enjoy the various nets and am an avid SSB and Ham radio radio user and try to respect the protocols. Technically, you should be using your license call sign when using the SSB (not your boat name). I did renew by VHF license a few years ago even though one is not required here in N.Z. One twist, I have a U.S. VHF/SSB license and a New Zealand amateur radio license. Cheers

I have tried on several occasions to figure out how to get a station license, even though technically I know I am not required to have one. The FCC certainly doesn't make it easy. Anyone have a link they can point me to?

Here is part of my communication with FCC:

On the My License page click the ?Apply for a New License? link. ..."

FRN is your FCC Registration Number they will give you in the end of the registration process. You will need it as your login! After you register you can file your application online. $160.00

Don't forget that if you are cruising outside US waters you will need besides the Ship's Radio Station license you also need a personal Restricted Radiotelephone Operator's Permit for yourself.
- - Be sure to get the MMSI number - there is a box somewhere in the forms for get one. This is your DSC number to enter into the new radios.
