vhf antenna splitter question

This forum seems to be a good place to share tips and questions, so I finally have one for you. I recently installed AIS transceiver and used a Vesper marine splitter so it could use the masthead vhf antenna. It all works well, except for one small glitch. When monitoring our cruising channel 72, and 16 via dual watch I experience a peculiar problem. Although 16 is always loud and clear, receiving on 72 has regular, momentary dropouts. If I cancel dual watch 72 is consistently loud and clear.
I suspect it has to do with the Vesper splitter because until I installed it I never had a problem. Any comments??

That sounds like normal behaviour for dual watch, the receiver goes off to listen on Ch 16 for a short while to see if there is any traffic there. Try reconnecting the antenna directly to the VHF and see if the symptoms go away.
