VDO Guage and Fuel Sender

Hi all,

I recently replaced a suspect fuel sender. Unfortunately, due to a previous crewmates ambitious attempt to fix the old fuel sender, he played a little around with the connections so I am guessing at the correct wiring for the new one.

However, with the 2 possible combinations for the fuel sender, I either get the tank displaying full (which it's not, its about 3/4) or the gauge sweeps to around 1/4 tank then goes back to empty.

I am now suspecting the VDO fuel gauge but I am unsure how to prove or test. Could anyone point me in the right direction?
