Using OpenCPN with Garmin 492

I am trying to learn how to transfer routes from OpenCPN to my Garmin 492. I am using a Windows 7 operating system. At present I am drawing and saving routes on the desktop, but I have error messages when I try to transfer to the Garmin.
Any recommendations??
