Using LSS-1 as Network Expansion Port...

I need real world advise...
In order to run a second MFD on my Simrad NSS setup, I need to install a network expansion port. The NEP-2 is the "made for the job" component but it is steep at $250.00. I can buy a Lowrance LSS-1 for about half that amount.
Can I use an LSS-1 "Structure scan " unit as an expansion port? Is there any disadvantage to doing this? (Power consumption, VHF interference.. )

Has anyone got experience with this?
