USGlobalsat BR-355S4 GPS Receiver

Upgrading my Raymarine E7 to an Axiom 7 and looking for a good (and hopefully cheap) way to get NMEA-0183 gps data to a legacy Standard Horizon Matrix VHF.

Does anyone have experience using a dedicated hockey-puck GPS like the USGlobalsat BR-355S4 GPS Receiver. Is it a good option and if it sits inside the boat will it read gps or does it need a view of the sky. The Actisense NGW-1-ISO converter looks like another option to convert from the Axiom but isn’t cheap and is pretty big if it has to go in the pod.

Suggestions most appreciated.

Re: USGlobalsat BR-355S4 GPS Receiver

I have pondered on breaking out the nmea 0183 data stream from a hockey puck GPS a number of times but have never gotten around to carrying out the experiment. I would get a short USB extension cable, cut it and rewire the power conductors to access the 5V required and give it a try, can't do any harm and should work.

Please let us know how it works out as I have the same problem since upgrading my stand alone GPS to a Raymarine e7. The alarm goes off on the GX 2150 SH radio about every half hour.

I have a hockey puck below deck connected to a PC. So issue getting a signal.
