TV Antenna for FM Reception?

When we bought our boat it had a television installed and a TV aerial on the targa frame. We removed the TV and I was just wondering if I could use the TV aerial for my stereo. Or should I remove the TV aerial and fir a proper Car stereo aerial in its place using the sam cable?
At the moment there is a short rubber antenna for the stereo hidden behind the curtains and it works sort of.
I am pretty sure it would work for FM reception but what about AM?
Thanks
Reiner

You can get an adapter to plug the am/fm radio into the marine tv antenna.

Shakespeare Antenna Specifications: SeaWatch® 4358 Off-air TV

Re: TV Antenna for FM Reception?

The old VHF TV antennas work fine for FM radio because the 88 MHZ ~ 108 MHZ band falls between VHF TV channel 6 & 7.

Thanks for your reply. We won't be fitting the TV back in the boat and use the TV antenna for the stereo only. I think this splitter is if you use both stereo and TV?

Your correct, splitter not needed for your use.

Thanks Bob, what about AM on the Stereo? Saying that I can't remember last time using AM.

Re: TV Antenna for FM Reception?

AM radio band is 550Khz to 1600Khz so is even lower in frequency than our HF SSB. An AM radio's built in antenna is OK, but a long wire would help pull in weaker signals.
