Re: TV: 12v vs 120v

I looked at those. $300 CAD which is about $100 more than the other solutions and more importantly, it look like it only plays MPEG 2 off the usb which is a real stopper file size and format wise...

I really don't want a tv (tuner) or a dvd payer, I want a bigger screen (19-22") to watch movies and tv shows off a portable harddrive. And I want it simple.
Here is what a quick google turned up for 12 volt tv's

Due diligence will narrow the choices to the the one you want that meets your criteria.

You'd think it was that simple.

I've got a list of possible candidates and a lot of sketchy info about what will or won't play from a usb hard drive. In the end I have narrowed it down to my initial choices (An Insignia from Best Buy with DVD for 12v or a Samsung smart TV for 120v). All of the so-called 12v stores featuring Axess, Naxa, RCA, Jensen etc are more expensive and have the most atrociously sketchy spec on what they will accept as input through their USB ports. I am open to being convinced though.

But the original "enquiry" was more of a 12v vs. 120v thing. While no one has addressed my Magnum inverter yet I am getting the sense that it is overkill for running a tv and if I was going to go the 120v route I would be better off using the old portable inverter I used to use when chartering. Which make me more inclined to just go 12v to avoid making a rat's nest of the whole thing.

Thanks for all the helpful stuff so far.

Re: TV: 12v vs 120v

Sometimes you have to actually go brick and mortar . There are many tv's that don't list online as 12volt but when in store you can see that they are powered by an external power supply just the same as a laptop and the output is 12volt going to the plug at the TV. They don't charge a premium due to not listing as a 12volt TV. Also there you can ask the tech about the USB input issue sometimes they will let you use a thumb drive to test the input. Take a movie or TV show with you.
