Tracking voyage from home

My daughter will be one of our emergency contacts. She asked if there was a way of displaying our position on her computer in real time.

I'm pretty sure there is but I can't remember how it is done or what equipment I need.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

Rich

Delorme Inreach... The single best device I have bought to date!

Check Kijiji or Craig's list as you can usually find a used one in pristine condition for 1/2 price!

I second Inreach - I use the Inreach SE and am very happy with it.

If you have AIS this site will show where you are

Live Ships Map - AIS - Vessel Traffic and Positions - AIS Marine Traffic

Tracking voyage from home

Used a Spot Gen3 to track us during our longest cruise in 2013-14. I also left it on when we were away from the boat. It has an inertial sensor, so when the boat moves, it starts tracking. Was good insurance to make sure the boat wasn't stolen as we were 750 miles away at times.

My son uses the DeLorme Inreach and is a mountain climber and mountain marathon runner. It is an excellent unit too and has two way messaging. He attempted the Nolans 14 in Colorado this past weekend. He had some HAPE on the 10th summit and got disoriented at night. He was able to get me on cell and I got his position on the computer and got him back on the proper trail. Given that you can message 2 ways, I would buy the Delorme Inreach over SpotGen3, but both are excellent products. Spot Gen3 has one way messaging only.

I have the spot 3. Have only used it coastal and traveling from New Orleans to California several times. Family and friends love it. They go to my link and see exactly how I'm progressing

Re: Tracking voyage from home

Delorme inReach uses the Iridium satellite network, and so has truly global coverage. Spot uses a different satellite technology, and has some gaps in coverage. Spot is a good system and these gaps may not be an issue for your cruising plans (they have good coverage in most regions), but you should make sure it meets your needs.

I too encourage the use of the DeLorme Inreach. As previously stated it is truly a Sat Phone with multifunctional at very reasonable monthly cost...

The Delorme Inreach also functions as an EPIRB. They also have several very economical connection plands that can be purchased on a month to month basis.

Smac9999
That doesn't follow. AIS must be transceiver but only the daughter has to have Internet. Otherwise how would we "see" boats mid ocean. Clarify please. R

It is not an EPIRB, and should not be confused for one. Is its SOS button better than nothing? Yes. But should not replace EPIRB for at least the following reasons:
1. Battery state is not guaranteed to be full when deployed.
2. Does not float.
3. Has no strobe light.
4. Does not automatically turn on when immersed in water.
5. Uses iridium phone technology, not dedicated SARSAT satellites.
6. Has no homing functionality for when rescue services get within range.

Not discounting its functionality, and I would use both if the situation warranted , but the cost of EPIRBs today means that anyone going offshore should have one.

Re: Tracking voyage from home

Buy and Iridium GO

!) you now have a sat phone (150 min a month)

2) free texts , your daughter can text you from the web

3) you now have email

4) it will send position reports automatically

5) you have social media if your in to that

5) you now have access to awesome 3rd party weather apps like predict wind that just launched a new version with a grib viewer installed (huge advance). They will also make your own tracking page with a map on it for you with the subscription.

so much more than a spot or inreach

Re: Tracking voyage from home

While not live ... you can have vessel tracking for FREE ... by using Amateur Radio. For those of you who may want global communications and a whole lot of other good stuff. read up on amateur (Ham) radio. There is a frequency in the twenty (20) meter band 14.300 MHz. USB that conducts a radio net every day of the year with expert operators. If you are willing to research this subject ... look up the "Maritime Mobile Service Network ... (MMSN) on line, lots of info.
Also, there is a net on forty (40) meters Lower Side Band (LSB) ... in the morning at 7:45 AM EDST ... on 7.268 MHz. with "Waterways Net".

Get started learning. No more GONNAS.
