It is not an EPIRB, and should not be confused for one. Is its SOS button better than nothing? Yes. But should not replace EPIRB for at least the following reasons:
state is not guaranteed to be full when deployed.
2. Does not float.
3. Has no strobe light.
4. Does not automatically turn on when immersed in water
5. Uses iridium phone
technology, not dedicated SARSAT satellites.
6. Has no homing functionality for when rescue
services get within range.
Not discounting its functionality, and I would use both if the situation warranted , but the cost of EPIRBs today means that anyone going offshore
should have one.
