Tracking boat postion on web?

I have seen a number of blogs in which boats enter their position and it appears on a world map. Ship Trak is one. I have also seen it on Google. It looks like a great way of letting family & friends know where you are. How is it done? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If your out cruising, Winlink and/or Sailmail work best.

Doing it manually on Google Maps so it updates on your website is a bit of a pain in the neck....... We are still "in" Sydney, but really about 1,000 miles up the coast.
I better go change it

As an aside, it is nice to have a piece of gear that automatically reports position. I have Skymate. It reports my position as often as I select, but up to twice per day is included in their service package.

I email that to a mail box set up to receive it and then feed it to a data base and post it in Microsoft Map. Used to use Google Earth and think Microsoft is easier to work with.

You can see my site at Sunspot Baby Position Reports - Home

Once set up, it is work free. Most other methods require logging on and manually sending position.

Thanks for the replies. I have gone through a lot of them and am sure that I can figure out a system to use. It looks like I will be looking into getting a pactor although the Spot looks pretty good.
Thanks again for your help
