Thuraya Satsleeve, anyone using one?

Looking at this device for remote comms

Basically slot your smart phone in, pay $15/mth for when you need it plus airtime

Anyone here used one?

Thinking to use Thuraya as an alternative to Inmarsat, Iridium or SSB.

Anybody using the Satsleeve or a regular Thuraya Sat phone?

Looked it up online and read a couple of reviews. Big issue, it doesn't work in North or South America and probably not offshore as well.

Re: Thuraya Satsleeve, anyone using one?

Yes, it doesnt cover the whole world.

However, the indian ocean is covered. On routes from Europe/ the middle east to SE Asia or the Seychelles, it might be an alternative to Iridium, Inmarsat or SSB. Especially as their hardware seems to be way less expensive. A "Satsleeve" is sold for around 600€ and a regular Sat phone for about 700, including a couple of minutes airtime...

Would love to hear if anybody did use Thuraya and can give some own experience with that System.

We are planning a trip from the Seychelles to the Maledives and then to SE Asia and are looking for a communication system to cover that range in case of an emergency.

John

Re: Thuraya Satsleeve, anyone using one?

HAM would be an alternative too, but we only have LRC licence, no HAM license. And marine SSB with DSC funktion are just too pricey and we think Sat phone are more the way to go today...

Anyone used Thuraya?

Re: Thuraya Satsleeve, anyone using one?

We finished our indian ocean crossing from the Seychelles to Thailand. Used the Thuraya Sat phone a couple of times to get conected to family and to get some help on solving some engine issues. And of cause as emergency backup.

Thuraya works great in that part of the world. There was an about one day spot between the Seychelles and the Maledives were we did not get satelitte coverage. Just like you can see on the map.

Beside that spot, great coverage, very good quality and very good priced, compared to Inmarsat or Iridium..
