Back to the topic of AIS in general, in my cruising this last month I have noticed a lot of yachts now carry it, and it has proven it's worth once again in fog out in the ocean, when a large Japanese fisher tried to collide with me. He saw me long before I saw him, as he was not transponding.
That is an argument for a transponder BTW. A lot of fishermen just watch and do not transmit. That they see you out in the fog is a plus.
