I saw the Andres case at the stockholm boat show last weekend. It looked well made and quite impressive. Putting in the iPad looked to be quite easy and it felt good in the hand.

It was displayed with a mounting bracket from http://www.brodit.com/ which clipped on so easily. Much better than adding something a ram mount ball to the back. I can't find the mount on their page but I could find it on the page of the Swedish store displaying both units

The iPad in the andres unit just clips straight in.

The brodit mount is reasonably priced but the andres case is a hard price to swallow.

My aqua pack is looking in danger of never being used.

I suppose a decent case and mount plus nmea (ais) data sent by wifi may save me from ever buying a ray marine c90w and having to install it.

I think the Andres case would have no problem with the ipad2, just add some rubber support.

We are thinking of purchasing Ipad 2 for use as backup Nav on board. We hear it has a robust battery life of 10 hours, but what about while using GPS? Somewhere we heard that the GPS sucks out the battery faster. Does anyone have any experience of this? Thanks.

Yes, the battery drains quicker with the gps turned on. Some nav programs you are able to set so the gps to turn on every 15 min or predetermined time. If you leave it on all the time expect 5 ish hours. Just set it to get a fix every 1,5,10,20,30 etc minutes. In the car driving at 60 mph youll want to leave it on all th time. You could also run a power cord into your cockpit and not have to worry about it.

I have not read this article but in the current issue of liveaboard magazine they sail from San Fran to Mexico using only an iPad for navigation. You might want to check it out. I plan on reading it next week.

If it's a backup, you won't have it on so it will not use any battery power while your primary navigation system is working. If you got into a situation where your other electronics failed and you were using the iPad as a backup, you should either have it continuously powered if you'll leave it on and actively following your position. If you don't want to keep it powered, then you'd turn it on every X minutes to grab a position and then turn it off. It'll work for a very long time in that mode.

Even my Garmin Chartplotter, which has a good sunlight-viewable screen, is almost unreadable when approaching right angles to the sun. It will actually fade out/ overheat in a following afternoon sun. Have had to make a visor for it. I don't think any screen technology can overcome extremes like this. The ipad/phone technology looks very tempting if for nothing other than the instant weather maps. The possibilities for navigation would seem to be almost limitless once chartplotting capabilities become available in coordination with Google Earth Ocean. It seems a reasonable next step to be able to access all nav. data: depth, buoy location, landmarks, etc. for all areas of the world where the data is available, accessible for free and overlaid onto calibrated Google Earth maps. Someone needs to break the stranglehold on chart information imposed under so called "copyright" laws.
