For example iBooks can open PDF files and Numbers can open MS Excel spreadsheets.

This is one thing that really annoys me with Apple and the iPad/iPhone. The need to use itunes and the one computer restriction. I've made the mistake before of using my
desktop to do all of the syncing and then foolishly think I can also sync on my
laptop. The iPod was totally wiped out.
I realise now that if I'm planning to be away from home for any extended period, I need to consider transferring my iTunes library to my Macbook and then hope it works. I love my mac toys, but this (and the resetting of the itunes library if the
network drive not up)
Whilst iBooks is vary readable, Readledocs allows you to create the iPad as a
remote drive on your
network for drag and drop of PDFs and other document formats. It allows you to also download PDF attachments from sites and even documents attached to emails can be loaded into Readledocs folders.
Still waiting to find a feature that allows me to to connect to a network from the ipad and browse for file to upload. maybe it is there but I have not found anything other than
remote "cloud" directories.
