The Marine Android Tablet

Although I've been playing with Android devices for a while, I finally ordered and received my first Android tablet - a Motorola Xoom. It's quite a nice device. Quick, beautiful screen, etc.

So of course I'm using NutiCharts. But what other apps should I have for onboard use for an Android tab?

ActiveCaptain..

The Globalstar SPOT CONNECT unit can connect with iPad and iPhone running Android via bluetooth. I wonder if it will also work on your Motorola Xoom? Do they use different versions of Android?

Does the Motorola Xoom have GPS and Google Maps?

The beauty of such a connection is that your position is transmitted direct to a Globalstar satellite and their internet database which is available to all SPOT units made public. And of course also to your Xoom.

Re: The Marine Android Tablet

Hi,
I bought a Android 10.1 tablet and could not install Navionics charts on it.
Market says that is not approved for my device (Toshiba Thrive).
How can I install the Navionics charts?
Thanks,
Mestre

Re: The Marine Android Tablet

This might be of interest to someone. I have an Acer A500 Android Tablet. I found an app: Marine Navigator Lite (no known "full" app). It took me a while to figure out how to get the charts in the right folder on the system but seems to be working good. It doesn't look like it will do multiple layered/seemless charts like OpenCPN but does seem to allow for viewing a single digital chart and your location within the chart. I have NOAA RNC's found here. I'm still working on loading charts (all of them) but might be better just to load the ones for the area you are traveling in.

Re: The Marine Android Tablet

To anyone who is currently using NutiCharts -- could you clarify for me . . . Can I use my own already downloaded NOAA RNCs, or does this app only work with charts bought from NutiTeq's store?

I just downloaded the app today and clicked to download charts, and was brought to their store page, where each state's charts go for $4 or $5 it seemed. (I would want the entire US East Coast and Gulf Coast, so that's a lot of states.) At that rate, this app isn't a bargain. But it is if I can use my own RNCs. . . .

Sorry if I'm a bit dense as to how it all works. Just getting started with my first Android device. Very excited at all the possibilities.

Re: The Marine Android Tablet

MX Mariner was just released and I hope they get together with Active Captain, works better for me. Is a nice little app that the developer just put up in the market. 5.99 for all the charts.
AIS app I use is MarineTraffic app.
BlueNMEA app allows you to share your cells gps with a laptop via bluetooth.

Re: The Marine Android Tablet

I've been emailing back and forth with Jeff about supporting Active Captain on MX Mariner. It is a feature I would like to add and is on the Unscheduled Features list. Realistically, I'll probably look at it seriously after this upcoming version (1.3).
