TACKTICK WIRELESS DEPTH/SPEED/WIND

Just checking to see if anyone has any positive or negative feedback on the reliability of this new wireless technology? I need to put a new system on my boat and not sure if this system is the way to go or not?

Thanks,

Kevin

I have the wind Mn unit, it works when it pleases, IE rarely, comes up with a bad signal error code fairly often, if you have a tall mast, I would not use it.

Re: TACKTICK WIRELESS DEPTH/SPEED/WIND

Not that new. Been around for decades now. We have an older depth/speedo as well as a windy (anemometer). Came with our current boat. Must be at least 10 years old now. I had to replace the internal battery on the hull transmitter when we bought the boat b/c it had been left uncharged for too long. Otherwise, the only problem we've had is with the anemometer occasionally getting stuck in low winds -- I think it's a bearing problem.

Overally I've been very happy with the system. I would probably buy it again if/when the time comes to replace.

Re: TACKTICK WIRELESS DEPTH/SPEED/WIND

The problem, I've been told by Tacktick themselves, is cell towers. If your out on the water away from population, then the units communicate just fine. But in the harbor or a marina don't count on it.

Mine after 3 years started the error thing, but it happened to be after a rough night in an anchorage.

I would say they are fine for mast heights less then 40' but not any more then that, even though they advertise at 60'+.

Do a search here on CF. There have been several threads discussing these instruments in detail. IIRC, the comments have not been very favorable on the whole.

Cheers,

Jim

Re: TACKTICK WIRELESS DEPTH/SPEED/WIND

We put a Nexus system in, instead, for about 1/2 the price. Works fantastic.

Hi
So this Nexus thing. Are we talking an i-pod type of unit or GPS system. Our boat is going to be due for something here soon.

Angry Re: TACKTICK WIRELESS DEPTH/SPEED/WIND

I bought a TO33 system last year and it has never worked for more than few minutes .
I complained to Tak tik and they sent me a new mast head unit which worked when walking round the boat , then even 40 metres long the quay .
When the new one was fitted back up the mast the exact same fault persisted .
My opinion on tak tick ?
its bloody expensive rubbish !

after spending 410 I still dont know the wind speed !
I will seek a full refund plus charges for 3 trips up the mast .

Re: TACKTICK WIRELESS DEPTH/SPEED/WIND

Had ours for about 3 seasons (wind/speed/depth). Love 'em, no troubles so far that weren't our own doing. We sail in and out of Boston Harbor all the time with no loss of signal. Our I dimension is ~40'.

Re: TACKTICK WIRELESS DEPTH/SPEED/WIND

I was told by Sunsail base manager that they tried to use them on some of the boats in their fleet, but few (if any) of these units lasted more than few months in tropical environment and eventually all had to be thrown away and replaced with wired units. Just my hearsay...

Wireless to the top of the mast (wired elsewhere), but 1/2 the cost of Tacktick, and they work.
