ST4000 Works with a ST 3000

Does anyone know if the head (control unit) on the ST4000 will work with the ST3000 motor and electrical hookups? I might be able to secure a ST4000 for a broken controller of a ST3000. Thanks

Re: ST4000 works with a ST 3000

I am not that familiar with the ST3000, years ago I had a ST4000.
It appears the ST3000 has a compass built into the control head. The ST4000 uses a separate fluxgate compass. So at a minimum you will need purchase the compass in addition to the ST4000 control head.
The specs on the two units show the power consumption to be the same, so it is likely the ST4000 control head can drive the ST3000 motor. You might talk to Raymarine to get their opinion on the motor compatibility, but it appears the only thing you will be saving is an old drive motor. Maybe best to replace the whole thing.

I'm not sure if we're talking the same units but for what it's worth I have an Autohelm 3000 and the Auto helm 4000 the 3000 having the external belt and the 4000 having the eternal belt mounted on the wheel. The control heads for these are interchangeable. The motor doesn't care where it gets the power from as it simply a reversing motor. Noel

Re: ST4000 Works with a ST 3000

Just picked up a used ST4000 with a bad motor. Thanks for the post, I was going to try using the ST3000 motor on the ST4000 and see if it works. I will also take apart the ST4000 motor and see what the problem might be. It looks like the ST4000 would get better results. It seems like the motor is mounted a little more secure to the wheel than the belt on the ST3000.
