SSB Receivers - Sony ICF-SW7600GR

Hi all,

I am planning to buy an SSB receiver primarily to listen to weather broadcasts in the western caribbean and later in the south pacific.

I was planning to buy a NASA HF3 unit but recently read an article on the SONY ICF-SW7600GR Digital World Band Tuner....spec says it covers pretty much every broardcast frequency know to man plus a bunch of other features and lower price.

The part I'm not sure about is the quality of SSB reception on this Sony unit....does anyone have any experience/knowledge with this Sony tuner?

Appreciate any comments

I was planning on using a Tecsun PL660. There were some reviews that put it ahead of the Sony at a cheaper price. Also, I think Sony is getting out of the shortwave business completely. The SW7600 is probably the last model they made or will make.

Many threads in the past have contained reports of folks having good results with the Sony. You might do a search to read them and find quite a bit of data that you will find helpful.

I have a Kaito 1103, and (like many others)have found it to work quite well and cost much less then the Sony.

Either way you will be better of (IMHO) then with the Grundig series receivers (Yacht boy). I have had 2, and was not very pleased with either.

I have an Eton E5 (same as the Grundig E5) and love it! I have received weather faxes (although never figured out how to de-scew (sp?) them). I have decoded many Ham digital modes with it plugged into my PC using various software (RTTY, etc). It's a great receiver and I would highly recommend it.
