SSB receiver

Hi All,
My family and I will be leaving Puerto Escondido next month for Pacific Mexico and Central America, and find that we need a way to get weather reports beyond the VHF and internet sources. We would (of course) like a fancy SSB transceiver with modem, etc. etc. but can't afford that right now. Can anyone recommend an SSB receiver that will give us weather, be easy on power and be affordable? I need actual brands and models, if possible. Thanks!

Re: SSB receiver

I have a Sony ICF-SW7600GR and have been very happy with it. I have not owned another to compare it with however.

You will want to add an antenna, such as: Amazon.com: Sangean ANT-60 Short Wave Antenna: Electronics

Re: SSB receiver

RainDog, thank you! The review helped a lot. And, Robertsailor, what is BFO? I come into this with little knowledge of radio communication. Is it feasible to get our weather, a go-no-go kind of weather report from these little radios? Must we use an external antennae or will the telescoping one do it? Don

Re: SSB receiver

It will depend on what you are refering to by "weather". If you need weatherfax or satellite images it takes alot more than just a reciever. If you want to hear reports like the noaa weather channels you just need a reciever, good antenna, list of frequencies and times and some practice figuring out what places on the band are working at the time to want to hear them.
There is a learning curve but its learnable. Not as simple as the WX button on a VHF.
The bfo is what allows you to recieve single sideband transmission or "SSB". Used by most all HF (high frequency) stations.

Re: SSB receiver

I had an HF receiver but yanked it out and sold it on eBay, then spent $4,000.00 installing a digital marine SSB. Great piece of machinery but never used it much. The exceptions would be for wife to make phone patches yakking with her sister.
On the next boat I would probably stick with a good receiver and NavTex. Or some Sat Com gear as it comes down in price.

For weatherfax you just need a bit of free software and a laptop ( mac or PC).

For the NOAA wx sats on 137 MHz? .. yes... you need fancier kit.

Re: SSB receiver

I've had many years use receiving weatherfax and more recently DWD rtty text in Europe using a degen 1103, great receiver though the operating system is a bit quirky.

Jvcom on a pc is a great piece of free software.

Very little more for weatherfax, I've had surprising good images just with an android tablet and app sitting next to a degen 1103 and a piece of wire as an antenna.

I tested an Android app too recently, just holding my tablet next to the SSB speaker I got surprisingly good images.

I still assume my Xaxero demodulator/software would out perform it in difficult sitituations. but I was impressed.

I've had the little Sony for over twenty years, on my second one now. No need for an external antenna, works fine.
