SSB Info - School Me!

We've not yet purchased an SSB radio for our 44' Orana (2011) but would like to....wide open to suggested makes/models/costs.

I would particularly like to hear about power and antenna installation for the system on a catamaran.

Use the Google Custom Search function in the Search drop down menu near the top of every page and enter "m802" or "m-802" or "ssb" and you will get all the schooling you will ever need and all from CF

Errr. You don't think that would slightly skew the research? :^). But yeah, I hear those 802s are a decent bit of kit. ;^P

Nah, those 802 threads often mention the two or three lesser SSBs that are available. It won't take the OP much reading before hunting down an 802 and without being too judgemental, the OP has 44' Orana so I don't reckon he/she is looking for a third rate option.

Anything better than an 802 is megabucks and better suited to steel monos over 300' (IMO).

Never looked at the 802, went straight to the SEA 235 R and was very pleased
With it.

The m802 is the "economy" SSB, with DSC, and a pretty good deal for Yotties. No longer available in the US due to spats with the FCC, but still available elsewhere. Everything else is far more expensive and meant for commercial use. See GMDSS. But I suspect the next generation of "amateur" stuff will be GMDSS compliant and less expensive than what's out there now. Unless the next-generation Iridium network is so slick that everybody just tosses their SSBs overboard.

Don't think so. I bought and installed it about 2001.
The later models may have DSC, not sure it was common on HF radios back then.
Used the SEA for 13 years on the boat and liked it a lot.
Mostly for phone patches via land stations when in remote spots, but also for Herb and BBC news, etc.
Would get a SEA again in a heartbeat.

Already got 24 volts on board. I knew it would come in handy one day. Now I can go buy a radio that costs nearly as much as the boat.
