Sounder periodically stops reading

My Raymarine depthsounder occasionally stops working. Usually exactly when it would be most useful of course! If I restart my E80 the depth display is back to operational. Does this seem like a loose or poor connection somewhere or a system fault in the transducer, DSM module or MFD? Or is it just waiting for me to try entering a shallow anchorage and cutting out while the system laughs at my look of dismay?
Thanks for your insight on this everyone.
