Software N2K to NMEA0183?

I have an Actisense NGT-USB adapter which puts N2K PGNs into my computer from my N2K network.

I would like to get this data into OpenCPN, but OpenCPN only speaks 0183.

Is there a software converter which I could use for this purpose? Anyone know?

Re: Software N2K to NMEA0183?

No one? This would seem to be very simple to implement in software -- take the N2K datastream coming in on the virtual serial port, and output NMEA0183 sentences, and ought to be useful for a variety of purposes. I can't find any such beast, however.

I could of course buy the Actisense bridge which specifically outputs 0183 over USB -- the NGW-USB, but seems like useless clutter if it can be done in software.

Or maybe I could take the datastream over wifi, from the Navico wifi-1 module (for GoFree)? This works beautifully with INavX. Anyone taken data into OpenCPN this way?

Not using the Navico, but our Vesper AIS has a NMEA over wifi bridge and that works fine with OCPN.

Thanks; hot tip. The Navico works the same way AFAIK. I'll give it a try.

Re: Software N2K to NMEA0183?

Interesting, thanks!

This: https://github.com/canboat/canboat/wiki/N2kd

is interesting -- software conversion of N2K to 0183. Unfortunately, only does a couple of sentences (heading, wind, depth). Would be really cool if it gets expanded.

This: SourceForge.net: Open Skipper - Project Web Hosting - Open Source Software also promises to display N2K data, and to convert to 0183! Unfortunately, not at all stable on my machine.

The project team would probably welcome feedback on your experience.

Looks over interesting, but just an idea so far.

Looks much further developed than that it seems - software is on github already...

http://www.panbo.com/archives/2014/1..._changer_.html

https://github.com/signalk

Looks to be tied in with the canboat analyser ..
https://github.com/canboat/canboat/wiki/analyzer
which...
"contains a large number of NMEA 2000 PGNs with guessed data formats and data lengths. The guesses mean that you should REALLY not use this blindly without checking that the guesses that the program makes are correct. Still, most PGNs have been found to work with a variety of devices and their decoding seems to be in order. If you find anything wrong with them, please fork and fix, then send a pull request to the maintainers."

Far from plug and play for us mere mortals by the looks of things though.

Bit more here..

The Marine Installer's Rant: Signal K is afoot.

In the long run it looks very interesting, but maybe not a download , double click and forget to do what you're after right now.

vYacht Yacht automation

This guy makes a router based on Openwrt , wich uses a modified GPSD software for NMEA2000 to 0183 conversion.

Be aware that there is a bug in the software regarding magnetic variation.

FWIW, I've discovered that my plotter does a thorough conversion of all the N2K PGNs which standalone devices do, except AIS, and outputs this in 0183 over its RS-422 port. Actisense make a cheap, opto-isolated 0183 to USB connector which I think I will use. Since there seems to be no simple software solution.
