sirius xm weather in the caribbean?

Any Sirius XM weather users out there that can tell me if they have coverage in the caribbean?

I am in Barbados at the moment and don't have coverage. Will be sailing the island chain north, so if anyone has experience of where I can expect coverage in the windward islands - this would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,
michael

Re: sirius xm weather in the caribbean?

I'm headed down to Bermuda form Rhode Island in late June. Has anyone had actual experience with XM weather on this route? Can you provide me a description of what detail was available? I'm looking at various sat phone options but XM seems a more efficient solution if coverage is sufficient.

Re: sirius xm weather in the caribbean?

upntum,
Sirius satellite coverage is fine along this route (and farther south to the Caribbean as well), but XM's is not as good / sporadic (and possibly non-existant at times)....
BUT...

But, be aware that neither service is designed for use on the hi-seas (coastal use only), and therefore while Sirius will have text weather forecasts for the near-offshore waters (up to 250 miles off the US east coast, the SW N. Atl. and Bahamas), they will not have forecasts for your entire passage, nor any graphic weather info along your route...and why should they as they are not designed for this...

But, all of that weather info and forecasts are available to you for FREE, updated and sent every 6 hours, via HF radio broadcasts in voice, text, and graphic (WeFax)....see details in this thread...

There is a wealth of info on this subject/service in many threads here....have a look and all your questions will be answered...
(just be aware that even though Sirius and XM merged a few years back, they still use different satellites, and have different coverage areas....Sirius is the one that does work quite a ways off from the US...XM is lucky to be good 200 miles off...)
