Nope. You need a touchscreen Navico MFD like a Simrad NSS or Zeus Touch.

(a) I could be mistaken: I don't own one, I only read the manual when trying to code up gofree support in my little program (and I might be confusing the zeus touch and the nss). But, yes, I did think it was noticeably unusual.
(b) It does make sense if you buy into the whole GoFree concept: the user shouldn't care about all that mucky networking nonsense and it all just works. Things only get trickier when you start wanting to interface 3rd party stuff, although arguably not that difficult

You don't need to know the IP address. I don't know if the Simrad WIFI-1 support it, but with my standard commercial router, I just need to type in the name I gave to my Zeus Touch. It support DNS. Like in OpenCPN, I entered Helm:10110

For it to work , there must be a service advertising protocol running , my fuzzy memory seems to remember its Bonjour. ??

Both bonjour and their own service discovery protocol detailed in the developer docs. The latter carries details of services and the devices offering them (including revision level so the highest rev one can be selected) wrapped up in JSON in multicast UDP packets.

Re: Simrad/B&G GoFree

Hi there,

I also use the name 'HELM' as the helm zeus but can't get opencpn to connect for some reason.

Any other tips to get opencpn to the go free?

Should I be using TPC?

Yes. Check out pbfein's post #12. Get your MFD to tell you the port and its address. Create a tcp data connection to that address and port. I haven't got a navico MFD to check whether the whole zeroconf thing will let you address the MFD as "HELM" but as you have to query the thing for the port anyway, you might as well play safe and use its IP address.

You've got a point, it's on 10110. And that'll be an example of the zeroconf stuff working. Much neater solution.

These are the GoFree PDF's which have information about tiers and network protocols.
GoFree Developer Toolkit - Simrad Marine Electronics

The pdf about the Web interface is interesting
UDP, Bonjour for Windows, etc.
The pdf about Tier 1 is also good
Talks about blocking out radar data stream so as not to overwhelm ships wifi.
