Side Scan Sonar

Transducer mounting location?
I have a leopard 39 cat (37ft). As an avid diver i am looking at installing a garmin echomap 95sv with a side scan transducer for wreck and dive site mapping. The Garmin and side scan is separate from the main boat navigational equipment. I have raymarine depth, chart plotter and auto pilot for sailing. The question I have is where to mount the transducer?

Forward of the keel i dont have good access on the inside of the hull. Beside the keel I have access but would loose one side of the scan as the keel would be in the way which would mean having two transducers with one on each keel (expensive + an extra hole in a keel)

What looks like the best position would be directly (about a foot) behind the keel and before the sail drive. Has anybody done this or something similar? does anyone foresee problems with this location?

any input appreciated.

Re: Side Scan Sonar

You really wan't the transducer as steady as possible. Thus I prefer having it on a tow fish as it eliminates most of the wave induced noice of sonar files. Yes, files becouse you wan't to look at the scans on a big computer screen to get clear look at the details.
Just for navigation for a narrow passage any other place is ok..

Re: Side Scan Sonar

I would like to install a Lowrance sidescan, for the same purpose, on my sailboat. Have you had any success with your project?
I was thinking of mounting the transducer to a PVC pipe projecting down about 4' from the transom. (I would mount it where my self-steering rudder mounts)
Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Side Scan Sonar

Is this only used at low speed for mapping? Maybe on a spar or tow from the bow cross bar.
