For what it's worth, my video editing experience runs to multi-1" machines with a Sony 9000 controller, although I was brought up on 2" machines. Not the sort or stuff to put in a boat!!! lol. I used to edit for ITN in the UK (amongst lots of other places).

I really like the tapless workflow, the new varicams shoot to solid state P2 cards so no need to buy $30k editing decks and log tape. Most prosumer cams now record to an SD or CF memory card. This can be a pro and con for a boat, I do not have long term experience with hard drives in a salt water enviroment, they do and have failed in my dry moisture free land based studio, I always have back ups and my drives in a RAID config. Tape on a boat might be a good thing for archive purposes. SD cards are so cheap now (and small) they are also good to archive footage on. If anyone is archiving footage on hard drives for long term storage on a boat I'd also suggest archiving to a dvd or blu-ray disk in addition to the hard drive.

Thanks for the heads up...I was wondering about that...I was considering a hard drive for the xl1s..I think I might forget about it now.

If your at the point where you have a cabnet full of mini dv's I'd archive them to dvd's in an uncompressed format and use the space for beer, of my 100+ hard drives that have been in storage 15 of them failed after sitting for a couple years, it is best to plug them in and defrag them every 6 months, this rewrites the magnetic code on the disk that gets weak after sitting for a long time. If you want to spend the $199 on a blu ray burner (disks are still expensive) that is probably the most reliable and space saving way at this time, hopefully in the future we will have 1TB SD cards for $49 and blu ray disks will be 49 cents.
Tape is really the cheapest and most reliable way to archive, tapeless workflow is great for speed and editing but expensive to archive in a reliable way (as of now).

Ha ha ha, broadcast HD footage is about 1 gigbyte a minute compressed at 6:1, the Red One cam at 4K is even worse.
Funny thing is now these older drives aren't worth anything. Wanna trade for your boat?

If you record to a Firestore just archive to blu ray, that would be the best way for you, do you also record to mini dv with the Firestore?

Don't get one for a boat or island shooting, they are a PITA, stay fast, light and mobile. They are good for on location shooting in a studio or on set but that's about it.

Ya....Thats what I would use it for mostly at Church.........but.... I wanted a rock solid archive system...and it sounds like it wont deliver so I will scrap the Idea.
Making me rethink the whole computer hard drive back-up in the Bank safty deposit box idea as well....what's a guy to do...

I had a Cubase studio in Boston but then my building caught fire and the nice firemen pored water all over everything. It was kind of awful. We sold everything that was worth selling and moved aboard. Best thing I've ever done. All you really need is a sound card and an acoustic, don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

You lost me Unbusted...That sounds redundant to my neophyte brain.
