Scanstrut Backstay Forward Radar Mount

Anyone here using a Scanstrut Forward Radar Mount?

Looking for comments/experience with this mount for my Simrad 2kw Radome.

My thoughts are that this would be out of the way, especially if I mount dinghy davits, there won't be a radar pole mount in the way.

Thanks

gunk

Another company made a well-regarded gimballed model...it began with "W".

Re: Scanstrut Backstay Forward Radar Mount

Gunk,

I have had the ScanStrut backstay mount on my Cal39 for 4 years and it is doing exactly what it is supposed to do. I have the ScanStrut forward of the backstay and radome also forward of the backstay. Just be sure you have plenty of clearance so you don't have to worry about the boom hitting the radome in an accidental jibe.

I installed my radar on the backstay for the same reasons you point out. Plus the additional benefit of it being a much easier installation

Just a word on ScanStrut. You can look at the other backstay mounts but you can't find one that is engineered or built as well as the ScanStrut. It is a really nice piece of equipment.

If you decide to go with the ScanStrut drop me a note and I will send you the revised installation instructions I developed. The instructions they provide with the unit makes the install more difficult than it needs to be. The job can be accomplished in a few hours by one person with the minor changes I made. I have cleared the installation procedure with ScanStrut.

Cal 39:

Thanks for the info. I did end up purchasing the same mount that you have, backstay, forward mount. Good news indeed, I am pleased with your evaluation.

If you would be so kind as to send me the info on installation, that would be awesome. I plan on installing the system come spring.

Thanks again!

Re: Scanstrut Backstay Forward Radar Mount

I used to have one of these and loved it as long as I was in Chesapeake Bay or coastal sailing. Then on the passage from Norfolk to the BVI's it was a bit rough with 20 ft. seas - the radome swung back and forth so violently it hit the stops on every roll and eventually tried to rip itself out of the transom (Three bolts on the mounting plate would have helped but there were only two). I had to immobilize it for the rest of the passage and moved it to the mast when I got there. A casual survey of the marina in Rodney Bay a bit later revealed that NOBODY else had a mount like that. Could be just chance or it could be that ocean sailing and scanstrut self levelling backstay mounts dont mix too well.
