looks neat. the big downside is every 2 years when you buy a new different size iphone, you'll need a new sat phone too...

I think that is one of the bigger advantages to units like the Iridium Go. It will work in the foreseeable future with varying models of smartphones since all it needs is a phone with WiFi and either Android or iOS.
Another benefit to seperate devices are that you can put it where there are a free line of sight to the satellite while you can stay in the shade/out of the rain.

Re: Satsleeve turns Iphone into satphone

Thuraya is a regional carrier (as someone posted above) with really great service within their coverage area and nothing outside of it.

I do believe that the SatSleeve has little adapters to accommodate different iPhone models (so you don't have to buy an entirely new SatSleeve each time you upgrade your phone, just the little adapter).

The nice thing about Thuraya is that their satellite phone service runs at around 56k. Compare this to an Iridium narrowband device (GO!, Extreme, 9555, etc) where they're running at 2.4k. With satellite speeds 25 times faster than Iridium and Inmarsat narrowband, you can do some web-browsing and generally just have a better data experience.

Due to their regional coverage, however, Thuraya simply won't work outside of the Middle East and Europe.

If you ever find yourself needing a satellite phone within their coverage map, the Thuraya Dual XT is a great choice as it is the only satellite phone currently on the market to offer satellite with GSM failover (or GSM with satellite failover, depending on how you look at it).

Re: Satsleeve turns Iphone into satphone

I recently bought the Thuraya SatSleeve for the iPhone 4S but it's also available for the iPhone 5 and Samsung 3 and 4. The coverage is the world except for the America's (north, central and south). I bought it at Xtreme Districts | Satellite & Radio Communications
Download speed is up to 60 Kbps and upload 15 Kbps GMPRS as for all their handhelds. Web browsing is an illusion with these speeds but sms, email or grib files and social is realy possible. Thuraya has a realy easy recharge service as well. Regards Tuiga

Actually, it's also good for Australia, PNG, Micronesia, Asia and North/Central Africa.

IOW, It's a good choice for everywhere except Americas, Atlantic, East Pacific and Southern Africa
