Satellite TV

We are docked off the James River on the Chickohominy. I own my own 18 wheeler and they have a mobile dome that keeps a sat. signal as you travel the road with dish or direct tv that cost about $1200. Why wouldn't that work on my boat? Does anyone recomend a sat. system for boats to keep a Directtv signal?
