Satellite Internet For Online Business (Someone has to buy the booze)

Hi Everyone,

I appologize if this question has already been posted but all I can find is info on simple email issues.

I have googled and I have googled...

Can someone point me to a good resource on satellite internet for more than simple email? Do you have to be made of doubloons to have access to the net for about an hour or 2 a day? I have a successful internet marketing company that was suppose to pay for the beer (ok and food fuel moorings etc) but I am having a hell of a time finding rates?? Anyone??

Cheers,

Sailor Amy

I don't know the exact rates, but the last time I checked it was measured in dollars per minute to cruise the web by satellite.

It's probably cheaper to launch your own satellite if you want satellite internet.

Hi Sailor Amy,

You don't mention in your post but I assume from the context of the question that you are looking for satellite internet connections offshore or away from coastal US?

If so check out threads about Iridium satellite service. It is not cheap and not high bandwidth. To get high speed satellite internet at sea will be BIG bucks. You would need a business generating a lot more income than beer and chips money to justify the cost.

If you need text only from offshore then Iridium would work or you could look into shortwave radio (Ham and/or marine SSB) with a Pactor modem. Plenty of posts on the forum on these as well.

If you are cruising the islands and will spend most of the time in port then wifi and internet cafes are very common unless you are waayyy out in the boondocks. I guess this will depend on how long you can afford to be out of touch with your business.

Unhappy

Thanks Everyone!

Nope, Richard, no one would ever accuse me of being rich! You have all confirmed what I suspected.

I'll research the great info I was given but I'm afraid you're all correct. I could get away with 4 or 5 hrs a week but I have to assume that is out of financial range for me considering the file transfers etc. etc.

I was planning on bumming around in the Caribbean for awhile before heading out for exotic ports. I know there is lots of info regarding wi-fi in the islands. Guess I'll just have to wait till tech. catches up.

Thanks again Everyone!

Amy

Amy...wifi broadband even at anchor is available in most caribe ports. Since 90% of cruisers time is spent on the hook...perhaps that is sufficient for you.
