Sail Mail sans Pactor

Can I send and receive sail mail without pactor, ie just with my sound card? It seems like if I can receive faxes with SeaTTY I should be able to send and receive text with some similar program.

Not on sailmail, but they are making progress on the Winlink (ham) version.

For a progress report, see WINMOR--A New HF Transmission Protocol for Winlink 2000 | Winlink 2000
