RS232 LCD Display on NMEA

I'd like to have a small display in my cabin to allow me to read lat/long, speed, depth etc from my cockpit-mounted NMEA instruments (Navman log and Raymarine Bidata).

I can shell out many bucks for a proprietary display, but I thought it would be an interesting project to buy a generic RS232 multiline display and connect it via an NMEA/RS232 converter, and configure it myself.

In theory it doesn't sound too hard, has anyone done this?

Just displaying the sentences as they pass by at 4800 bps wouldn't be hard, but I think it would be hard to glean the information from them.

Brookhouse sells a MUX to which you can attach an LCD display and program it to show whatever you want, but that solution isn't dirt cheap.

I'd personally use a PIC breadboard solution. You can either build one from scratch or get a kit that includes a PIC chip and basic I/O board (including serial or USB and some multiline LCD, some other details, and the software development tools). It should be fairly trivial to write an application that starts up and immediately just scans the serial port, updates the data, and loops. In fact, you've spurred me to consider doing the same thing at some point. I'm up to my eyeballs in projects right now, but if you do this, ping me and maybe we can start a thread on it.
