How old is the boat? If the thru hulls have lasted that long the way they are whether it be bonded or not, I wouldn't change it, just my 2c.

Re: Rewiring of Cape Dory 28

thanks for all your comments!

I slowly started with bilge pump and found following:
- positive wire goes to the control panel
- negative wire goes to the engine - is a special requirement for bilge pump or previous owner just did not bother to lead the wite up to the control panel?
- engine is connected with negative bus in the control panel, so the bilge works

does wiring of bilge pump differ from wiring of other devices?

Re: Rewiring of Cape Dory 28

Typically the bilge pump should be wired as "always hot". Meaning if the battery switches are off the pump still has power applied.

Most modern panels have a seperate circuit set up for this and "memory" circuit for electronics that require it.

My pump is on a totally seperate fused circuit not connected to the dc panel or switches in any way. Both positive and negative go straight to the battery bank with the bilge control panel in series on the positive side.

However, no problem with the negative going to the engine ground.

But, does your pump work with the battery switch set to off?

This good advice is still as valid today as when you first asked for help (but didn't take it).

Re: Rewiring of Cape Dory 28

probably the best advice is Terra Nova's get a book on marine electrical.
The negative side of your electrical will terminate at your engine, The bus bar is just a convenient point to attach all grounds inside your electrical panel(not control panel). A properly sized wire (calculated by total current of panel by length to engine )will run from bus bar to engine block.
Do you have an understanding of how to calculate wire gauge size?

Nope + to + and - to -. Install the appropriate rated fuse in the + lead within seven inches of the source of power.
