Replacing Robertson/Simrad AP-300X

My usually reliable old AP300 suddenly switched to auto and steered the boat sharply to starboard while I was enjoying the thrill of passing through Woodís Hole against a 5 knot current. It dook a moment or two to realize the auto pilot was some how in auto and even if I had placed it in auto mode, it should have allowed the boat to continue on course.

I tried the auto mode again when heading home. Sure enough, the boat swung to starboard although not as sharply. My problem could be the rudder feedback although the AP3000 display seems to track the rudders OK. This is a very old system by technology standards but I am hesitant to replace it only because of the headache of running cables from the bilge up to the helm of my old Silverton 40 aftcabin.

So the meat of my post is does anyone have info pertaining to using existing wiring to swap out an old flux gate compass to a rate compass used with a new AP44 system and of course the same for the rudder feedback coupling. My existing system uses a Robertson RPU/160 reversible pump which I hope is compatible with an AP44 system. Yes......suggestions.......please. Thx
