Re: Replacing masthead unit for Datamarine Wind instrument

Regarding the friction stuff, you should have lubed that to make sure its spinning freely. I didn't have that friction problem.

Did that.

I don't think it's a matter of calibration. It simply stopped working, as in the dial doesn't move any longer.

Not sure what you mean by dial. Is vane on the masthead unit not moving? Or is this the dial for the heading on the repeater. What does main display show for the heading?
Sounds like it might be a connector issue then.

stator (output) 3phase 11.8 v will work but it might have shaft that is too short to put the vane on. Here is one from Kearfott but it needs some sort of shaft modification/extension Kearfott R510 1A Synchro Control Transmitter 400Hz | eBay
This is a bit of an old post but I hope my recent discovery is of some help to someone.

Turns out used "servo transmitters" aren't so rare after all. Find another gauge for a little as possible (ebay is a good source) and tear it apart. You will find that the syncro transmitter(in the mast head) and receiver(in the gauge) are exactly the same. A little bit of research (Synchro - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) some mechanical work and a bit of soldering and you can be back in business in no time.

Re: Replacing masthead unit for Datamarine Wind instrument

I have a data marine instrument group with a wind vane assembly.
If still needed, let me know.

Am I hearing this right? (7 years later), I could actually disassemble the unit, and replace the windvane unit with this?
Kearfott Singer Synchro Differential Transmitter RS941 2D 5990 00 607 0116 | eBay

How do you get it apart? I see all the .050 allen wrench screws, but the 2 holes on top, don't seem to do anything.

This has been a great thread! Thanks for the details!!

Re: Replacing masthead unit for Datamarine Wind instrument

DMI & Datamarine
Steve is an exceptional guy and a great resource for sailors. He repairs Data Marine instruments and dir a great job on my wind display unit. It seems to work great. The shipyard finally got its new cherry picker and dismounted the masthead unit yesterday. I have a rebuild kit, but I noticed that it is difficult to pull the electronic assembly from the cylindrical housing. I am afraid to unscrew the two allen too much… Maybe just the cable is somewhat rigid and I need to lubricate it a bit ( I usually use kids bubble soap… it works great in order to give more play in the rotors.
Note: I am surprised there is absolutely no YouTube on that topic… And your explanation that I had read in 2010 or so does not show on google any more… Good for you Job security?
Could someone help ? Thank you
