Remote sonar

Several times I've wished I had a portable sounder to check entrances to unmarked canals and anchorages ... Today I saw a humminbird wireless fish finder (Smartcast)... hook it to the line on your fishing pole and cast the remote unit where you want it. The reciever is in a wrist watch LCD plotter, claims a 75ft radius operating range and 100 ft depth.
I had to get it Tried it in the pool today and worked well from 8ft to 2ft of water, even showed the bottom drain cap of the pool.
Tomorrow I'll try it off the shore and dingy to check out entrance to our canal.
Any one else ever try one of these gadgets ?

I liked my Vexilar “LPS-1" Handheld Digital Depth Finder: Looks like a flashlight, with built-in transducer. Goto: http://www.vexilar.com/products/lps1.html

Gord,
I wonder if it would give accurate (fairly) distances in the horizontal mode?

Jentine:

I have a hand held which, when use under water works well horizontally.
