Reciprocal ham license - Bahamas - Social Security Number???

We are getting ready to go cruising in the Bahamas in the Fall and are getting ready to apply for a reciprocal ham license with the Bahamian URCA, the agency tasked with issuing reciprocal licenses. On the application they ask for your National Insurance /Social Security Number. In this day and age of identity theft, I am a little concerned about sending that info to a foreign country, sight unseen. Am I being too cautious? Have others provided their SS number? Any problems? Thanks for the input. gchabs.

I don't recall using my SSN. You only need to fill out two pages of their very general purpose form but I forget which two pages. Take a look on waterwayradio.net.

You should be careful about sharing your Social Security Number, even when you are asked for it. You should ask why your number is needed, how it will be used and what will happen if you refuse. The answers to these questions can help you decide if you want to give out your Social Security number.

Re: Reciprocal ham license - Bahamas - Social Security Number???

Folks: Thanks for the replies. I plan on using winlink and sailmail, as well as communicating on ssb and ham channels. Consequently, I will need the reciprocal. I think I will just submit the application without the SSN and add a note asking if they really need it. Since it is in the area of the application dealing with health insurance, I may also include a copy of my health insurance card. If that doesn' work, then we will go to plan B. . . . Anyone have a plan B. Thanks. George

When asked around last winter in the exumas lot of cruisers didn`t know about the licence others just didn`t bother, so I opted for plan B.
I do not recall about such licence in the med either.
I wonder where else do they ask for a reciprocal ham license?
Just my opinion.
Bob.

All countries except for ones covered by agreements discussed on this page.
