Re: Raymarine wheel drive SD6000 issue

Confirmed (for X5 without rudder sensors) if a cumulative loss of counts displayed on the panel as "rudder position" exceeds the maximum, then the unit stops steering.

What I was noticing is that the degree to which the unit losses counts is very dependent on conditions / sail trim etc.

I went for hours without exceeding the rudder position buffer yesterday going to weather, but needed to reset (cycle from automatic to manual) every couple of minutes when heading downwind in heavier conditions. Not sure why the unit would loose counts in one set of conditions and perform well in other conditions.

That really is odd. If it was my boat I would put a sensor on it.

Tried to, but the quadrant is above the cockpit deck (in a recess) and there isn't sufficient clearance for the rudder sensors to be attached. The dealer installing it said the sensors were not necessary. Would be great if someone made sensors with a smaller form factor.

Or possibly the manufacturer will provide a firmware patch with an option that lets the unit keep operating by ignoring the rudder position if the sensors are not installed.
