Raymarine Smart Controller

After I replaced the battery (paying $60 for a pair of AAA NiCds with a shrink wrap and three wires) the SmartController returns “0000 Checksum fail”. The Raymarine website says I need to bring it to a dealer for software reload, but then it also said the same for changing the battery. Does anyone have a solution?

Solution? One approach is to never again buy Ray Marine products... that's what I have done!

Sorry that I can't be of practical help... good luck with your project.

That same solution worked on my autopilot too.

I have a Furuno autopilot driving an L&S hydraulic drive. I kept the original Ray AP as a backup.

The Ray APs I've had have had some issues with reliability. I replaced the AP computer 3 times in 8 or 9 years on my previous boat. Ray likes planned incompatibility, so each time you replace the computer you have to replace the control head.

The Ray APs drove the boat well when they are driving. There method of failing is unsafe. If the boat gets off course the unit would raise an alarm and quit driving. Essentially taking its hands off the wheel. So on rare occasions the boat just takes a flyer.
