Raymarine Radar on PC

is there any non-raymarine software that would allow raymarine radar (model RL-7)C) to be displayed on a p.c. screen??

thanks

I've never been able to get the radar to show on my laptop despite having the hardware and software.

Theoretically it should work with Nobeltec, but what about the hardware end GPS into PC via USB then has to go to NMEA in on the Raymarine radar and data from Radar back to PC. NMEA into ICOM M504 with data cable back again is another question...but all tied together.

If I may expand on the original question, is there any method or brand of radar that will feed into a computer for display or that has a VGA output directly to a computer monitor?

Maybe I should qualify my question a little further by stipulating that it would be reasonably priced.

Yes several , Euronav - Marine Navigation Software ECDIS, ECS and AIS tracking systems for one, Nobeltec, for another . A google search will reveal all.

You might be interested in checking out my PC Navigation software comparison I've been doing.

And a RADAR Comparison

While some RADARs can use software they may still require a chartplotted in the system. The KODEN RADARpc does not.

Hi Patrick,

Thanks for the link to your research results. I'm assuming the radars listed are for antenna/transmitter only w/o display.

Hi Dave,

Had briefly looked at these before but they failed the second qualification, reasonably priced. I found the Koden system listed for almost USD $8000.00. A full, stand alone, entry level Furuno LCD system complete can be had for about $1400.

What I was hoping for was something along the lines of OpenCPN for radar; an inexpensive antenna with a software link to a laptop for display.

It seems that SI-TEX used to be owned by Koden (Si-Tex America has been sold. | FS Forum Archives). I wonder if these SI-TEX Radars could be used with PC software. They are priced from 1,100 $:

SI-TEX MDS-1 Radar Sensor 2KW 12" Dome
SI-TEX MDS-8 Radar Sensor 2KW 20" DOME
SI-TEX MDS-9 Radar Sensor 4KW 24"Dome

My initial filter was just radomes (I have a sailboat) so the list is limited to that. Then I started narrowing it from there, but once I decided I wanted to have a PC based nav system and no chartplotter it really became obvious the RADARpc with multiple software options was the way to go.

I have a blog post on this: S/V Deep Playa - Pearson 424 : We're looking for the trash fence

Are you looking at the radomes? Koden radomes are not $8k.
You can get cheaper dedicated LCD radar with limited (ARPA to 0183) nav integration, ut if you want RADAR&chart overlay and PC Nav integration you have to go up the food chain in the features list and thus the price point.

I don't know of an ynon-Raymarine software that will do what you want. However, it is easily done using Raymarine 6.0 software interfaced with a HSB box from the RL70C radar unit to the PC screen. I have the radar overlay upgrade and successfully have it on the PC screen (a laptop works the same) which I then in turn display in the cockpit on a Ocear PC screen. On the PC, I also use Nobeltec (not with radar, but for AIS and weather overlay from WX Worx). If you want to go the Raymarine route, a little more expensive, Chuck Anderson at Raymarine can be very helpful. The RL70C then becomes a backup unit with its c-maps and/or radar. This system works pretty flawlessly on my Cambria I have for sale.

From what I have seen the Software is about $600 and assuming your RL70C is working I think its all you will need. This is the route I intend to eventually go but I am first replacing my radar CP at the helm with a C90W. PC stays below decks and will be used for cruise plannign and plotting. I wanted a waterproof color display at the helm that would show radar, chart, and AIS overlays.
