Raymarine Autopilot (SmartPilot) (Wheel) help

HELP.

Plan is to leave for a trip on Friday for a while but........

Long story short, my autopilot computer is toast. The circuit board got soaked and after baking several times it does not work. While wet it would give a warning on the control head of "over current" and return to standby mode. After baking it the 15 amp fuse blows when power is applied. The "over current" warning was supposed to warn if the motor was drawing too much current but happened even if the motor was disconnected.

There is a plastic box on the board that has some sort of electro-mechanical device (part of the gyro?) that clicks and then the fuse blows. I suspect this and would like to get one from an old board and replace it to see, but my time constraints means if I do this it will only be for a backup, as I need a replacement NOW.

If anyone has this part or an old board I would like to have it. On the part is written/stamped V23076-A3001-C132 Portugal.

So, as to the replacement...........

My searches lead me to people selling these things and not for just parts as I need a not-new one and only need the computer. Not the compass, position sensor, drive motor or the controller.

All I can find that looks like mine is a tiller pilot that they call a tiller pilot plus corepack. RAYMARINE E12137 X5 TILLER PLUS PILOT COREPACK

My computer box looks like that in form but only says a stylized "SmartPilot" below the "Raymarine".

Is it interchangeable?

I can't find just the computer anywhere.

I can't find an older one anywhere.

My manual is from April 06.

Nowhere do I find the "advertised" unit like the ones I hear about - ST6000 wheel pilot, and now the X5 or X10.

There is a newer looking computer.

And the plastic box looks the same.

Can I get one of these and have it work?

The newer one looks like this and is an X series.

But then so is the X5 above which looks like my box.

I plan to call Raymarine tomorrow asap but would appreciate some advise here.

Thanks.

PS
The info on the back of the box is three stickers.

5538-001 10337656 SN I think

CE E12180 0380227

V4.58

PPS:

My computer looks almost like this one

My smart pilot went out a couple years ago as I was headed south.. I got ahold of customer service at Raymarine and spoke to the person in customer relations..
They took my credit card number for repair, sent me a referbished unit and it arrived in two days.. at the same time, I had sent them mine... they rebuilt mine and charged me for the repairs.. They kept mine and I still hace the referbished unit and its working fine....

Working fine, but too small for the boat: A 42' Cat. The owner took it off after 2 days and gave it to me to sell on ebay while he continued his trip around the world.

It is the electronic controller of a S1 Wheel Pilot.
I could sell the whole package, or part out the pieces.

found this.

Raymarine Marine Electronics - S1 Wheel Pilot

Did not see this one in my searchs of the site before. The grey box looks just like mine and the description fits. I don't know why they call it X5.

Raymarine is hanging on by a thread. On the 10th they had a buy-out offer and their stock is recently up 24% and the banks are still lending them money - but unless they are bought-out they will no survive. Get your parts fast!

Have you tried calling the nearest Raymarine service point and asking if they could replace just the board? I toasted one (well, I did not, but it stopped functioning as advertised and there was our marginal contribution to it) and they replaced just theboard which was less expensive than any other option. Off course - we had to deliver the unit and collect it.

BTW

If your old unit was the 'plain' one .. (non-"gyro").

What the heck ;-) If you can afford it ... get the newer, 'gyro' one, they do deliver.

My own will be - the 'gyro' plus the better drive unit (GP). My old one (Autohelm 1000 unit!) burnt in Brazilian doldrums ;-(

But I did use the 'new' (gyro) units and they DO deliver! (less power use, less bzzzz-bzzzz at night).

Gyro..? do you mean the Flux Gate compass`?

Now aware of any wheel mounted autopilot with a gyro..Not sure it is needed either.

OK,
So I called Raymarine and they will take my bad board and send me another by Thursday for $200.00.
Board to them - $28.00 USPS overnight.

So it will just be the install and setup.

Still plan to leave on Sat or Sun.

I did not say gyro, I said 'gyro'. I mean a rate gyro sensor.

E.g., from Raymarine, as described i.a. here:
Raymarine Marine Electronics - Press Releases

But all major brands feature them nowadays too.
