Re: Raymarine a78 + standard horizon gx2200
See my previous post above. The eBay devices looks like the Raymarine E70196. Raymarine states that this is a one-way apapter, allowing a STKng GPS or MFD to send GPS data to a VHF radio that only has a NMEA0183 interface. My understanding of your situation is that you are trying to send AIS data from a NMEA0183 VHF radio to a STKng MFD, the opposite for what the E70196 is intended.
The Miltech device looks similar to the Actisense adapter that Raymarine recommends. Both appear to be an overkill for your limited need, but unless someone comes up with another device it looks like you are stuck the high priced items.
Have you posted your question on the Raymarine forum?
John

it is not a simple solution. you bought 2 devices not compatible. and should have asked the store or here before you bought them not after.
if you bought a nmea 2000 radio. or a plotter with nmea 183. you would just connect them together. that would have been a simple solution...

Raymarine a78 + standard horizon gx2200
Well...thanks for your support, to what is obvious to you and not all..i am only now learning that the protocols are not interchangeable, after purchasing, what i thought were the better products due to their features. Had i known that nmea 2000 and 0183 were not compatible like USB versions are, i would have considered otherwise but not now. regret is unprofessional.i like what i have and will find a solution of my liking and budget.i thank the kind people of this forum for all their guidance and advise and hope to be of help when i can.
how about some real guidance and not some backseat driver comments

Re: Raymarine a78 + standard horizon gx2200
Subway Sailor , you're not the only one feeling takin on the nmea 2000/0183 experience of buying . After looking at so many VHF's i didn't check witch nmea the GX2200 had. For $400 bucks & it being a new radio ,i was thinking nmea 2000. Guess i was looking at the remote Ram3 mic option, dual channel AIS,GPS,DSC & displays to note the 0183. Sure hope they don't come out with a new 2015 radio that has nmea2000 / WiFi / bluetooth for the same price. Gotta love this radio it has so much. Thanks for pointing this out or my next purchase could have been another learning experience .

You may not like the comment but there is truth in it, Because of not doing the homework it now appears you have but one choice and its is not an inexpensive option. It would appear from a cursory look, that the only way to get things to work is shell out another $200 or thereabouts. I didnt look to far past it because this method will work and solve the problem.
We have all made this mistake in the past and it needs to be rectified. Mine cost $46K more than yours to fix. Make your choice,
Be thankful its only money and not something else.
Getting upset at someone because they pointed out the obvious, Whilst annoying, however basically its our pride that is offended. It was (y)OUR mistake, The protocols are stated for all to see and you didnt read them. You assumed.
Im sure I will mess up on something else in the future but am prepared to be irritated but will fix the problem. What are you going to do?

Re: Raymarine a78 + standard horizon gx2200
Subway Sailor,
According to Raymarine the a6- and a7- do not utilize NMEA 0183. They do however support STng, which is the Raymarine version of NMEA 2000.
You will would need to purchase the following two items in order to get AIS data from the GX2200 into your A78:
T70134 STng Starter Kit
Consisting of:
A06064 STng 5-Way Connector
A06031 STng Backbone Terminator (X2)
A06040 STng Spur Cable, 3M
A06049 STng Power Cable, 2M
NGW-1-STNG NMEA 2000® Gateway
NGW-1: NMEA 0183 to 2000

Re: Raymarine a78 + standard horizon gx2200
I think I'm going to upgrade to the Ray70 VHF radio by Ray Marine it's pretty much the same thing and it has the same protocol. Thank God for return policy of usa, even though I haven't taken it out of the box yet.

Re: Raymarine a78 + standard horizon gx2200
you still need the stng starter kit. and possible a stng to nmea 2000 adapter. it appears that radio is nmea 2000 which is kinda funny it's not seatalk ng.

Raymarine a78 + standard horizon gx2200
For those of you who are curious about my outcome… You know West Marine was kind enough to take the return and give me a 741XS Garmin chart plotter and radar combo in order to connect my units!!!
