Raymarine A70D NMEA0183 to VHF Standard Horizont GX2150

Hi! I need help to connect my GPS/Plotter Raymarine A70D NMEA0183 to my VHF Standard Horizont GX2150. I have made a connection as it is written in both manuals. Raymarine Power/NMEA cable, I`ve connected in this order
White (In+) to VHF (Out+) Blue
Green (In-) to VHF (Out-) Green
Yellow (OUT+) to VHF (IN+) Gray
Brown (OUT-) to VHF (IN-) Brown
I have setup at first all on baud rate 4800, then I try to setup all to 38400, Then at the end I try to setup on my gps NMEA port 1 on 4800 and port 2 to 38400. I also try settings on VHF with all baud rate, but all unsuccessful!
Does anyone knows where is the catch here? I really need help since I can not solve it along.

The GX2150 manual shows the "gray" wire is "DSC Output", yet you indicate it is an input?

Connect the GX2150 gray wire, to the "input" of your chart plotter. For the DSC Output of the GX2150 (gray wire), set the baud rate to 38400. When the baud rate of the DSC output is set to 38400, the GX2150 will send both DSC and AIS sentences out that port. As both DSC and AIS is sent out the gray wire, you do NOT need to connect the brown wire from the GX2150.


I also assume, the GX2150 is NOT receiving the GPS position from the chart plotter, your connections look incorrect. Download both the documents below, the second document has a diagram with wire color codes for both sides of the connection, follow these:

Take a look at the archive section of the SH site, look at the document named: GX2150 Updates Final 02.14.11.pdf. The Raymarine A series document on the SH site is missing or corrupt, take a look at the "Raymarine C wide series" document on the SH site, it appears the C wide series uses the same wire color code.

You see, I have on my VHF SH GX 2150
Blue Input +
Grey Output +
Brown Output -
green Input -
And on GPS raymarine A70D I have
Yellow Output +
White Input +
Green Input -
Brown Output -
Beside that I have also, orange-yellow, Orange-White, orange-green, orange-brown, and one tiny black wire that was not connected at all.
So I have attached first, but it didn`t work:
Blue to Yellow
Grey to Whyte
Brown to green
Green to brown
Then I try to disconnect first the green from GPS as the common wire, then connect again and disconnect brown from GPS, but sill the same. Now I have blocked tottaly and I do not know where I make mistakes.

There is also one symbol on my SH 2150, like letter A, but I could not find what does it means at all.

Here is the picture of my SH display, and from GPS too. As you can see, I don the settings to 38400 B-rate, and try to change, but nothing...

Is there any possability to measure the signal from the GPS on the NMEA0183, to check if it is working at all?

I found this document, GX2150 Updates Final 02.14.11.pdf , but what should happen with the green wire from SH? live it disconnected?

your wiring looks correct. you must also set the speed in the radio to 38,400

2150 - a70

blue - yellow
green - brown
gray - white
brown - green

go into the port settings and make sure gps output sentances are turned on. like gll.

A is the channel. channel 16a

to test signals you need a laptop with a serial port and a terminal program like hyperterminal.

try using port 2 of the screen instead and see if it works.

try connecting each pair at a time. only connect 2150 output. you should have ais on plotter. only connect 2150 input. you should have gps on radio. you can test one at a time.

if both are not working, you have 2 problems

leaving the green off may work. that is a rs422 vrs rs232 issue. which gets more complicated. just try both.

Hey Guys,
I don't think what was recommended above is correct. Please re-read my post above, and download document "Raymarine C wide series" as I indicated. This C series has the same wire color code as the A series, but I don't think you need all connections shown, just what I show below.

I have the A50 with the SH GX2100, slightly different but similar where I have experience to help here.


Here is how you want to connect your wires:

GX2150 ................... A70

AIS/DSC OUT:
BROWN --------------> WHITE [Edit: Maybe gray, see post below.]
GREEN --------------> GREEN

GPS IN:
GREEN <------------- BROWN
BLUE <------------- YELLOW


As you can see above, only 3 wires are needed on the GX2150, as you bond the grounds (Green on the GX2150 connected to both Green and Brown on A70.)

Settings:
GX2150:
AIS OUTPUT (Brown wire): Set the AIS Output to 38400 baud. This will cause the GX2150 to send both DSC and AIS sentences out the AIS port (Brown wire.) Because of this, you should not need the GX2150 Gray wire (DSC Output), this should be unused.


A70:
Set PORT1 to 38400 baud, this will set both the input and output (white/yellow) links of this port to 38400, which will match the GX2150.


Test the above, and doing one link at a time as suggested above is very sound advice.

NOTE: The SH documentation contradict's itself, one document says use the gray wire one says use the brown. If the brown wire doesn't work, disconnect it and try the gray. No wonder 90% of users don't have this hooked up, this is crazy...

UPDATE:
The document you need on the SH site is missing, the link is broken:
"Wiring Raymarine A, C & E Classic, Wide Series and c-Series, e-Series to GX2150.pdf"


I did a Google search, and found the missing document in a SH forum post. Refer to the attached. This diagram shows to use the "Gray" wire, which contradicts the SH Word document "GX2150 Updates Final" which you downloaded above.

50/50 chance, you can follow what I said above and use the GX2150 Brown wire, or follow the document which I'll try to attach here, which says to use the Gray wire. If it doesn't work, substitute Brown for Gray or vice versa.

Everything tried but no succeed at all. I think that I need now to test the signal at the Plotter to see after all does the signal cable works at all.

Where can I found a scheme to connect a GPS to laptop?

What did you try? You can get rs232 pin outs with a simple google search(DB9 Pinout), you also need a serial port on your laptop (which they haven't put in in 10+ years), possible need a USB to DB9 converter and know how to install and configure it, need a DB9 cable you can sacrifice and cut the end off, need a volt meter to identify the wires (PIN 2 and 5 to receive from chart plotter), and need to know hyperterminal or other terminal software and know how to configure it. The Raymarine has a diagnostic mode that will show what it is sending/receiving, this may be better than a laptop.

Anyways, you seem way over your head, connecting to a PC will be far more complex.


As mentioned, please go as simple as possible to eliminate all variables, please try ONLY this:
1. Set to 4800 Baud
2. Set A70 Port 1 to 4800 Baud
3. Connect wires as follows:

GX2150 :::::::::::::::: A70
BLUE <--------------- YELLOW (GPS DATA)
GREEN ---------------- GREEN (Signal Ground)


Ensure the A70 has a gps lock and is displaying your lat/long.

The GX2150 should now show the satellite icon, as well as display the lat/long.



If the above doesn't work, verify on the A70 what sentences you have configured to send (you should not of needed to change anything here), goto:
- System Integration Setup Menu / NMEA Output Settings.

Reply with what you have set, let us know how it goes.
