Question Radomes

I am looking at buying a radome to go with the Raymarine E80 that I have.
Can anyone tell me if there is a considerable difference in performance between the RD418D radome and the RD418HD radome - there is a big difference in price ( factor of 2!)

I can speak to this as I've had both connected to my E80s because of a mix up when I had radar installed (I asked for HD they installed non-HD, then they sent me the HD and I swapped them, luckily on a pole not up the mast)

The biggest difference I noticed right away is that the HD color-codes the displays indicating the strength of the return. This is helpful/nice but..... The HD does show the landmass shapes a little clearer, which is more noticeable on the chart overlay, tho I usually us the split screen.

I do believe the HD can resolve small objects (e.g., nav markets) better but maybe that's just me trying to justify the added $$ to the Admiral. We were on the move when I made the switch and didn't have the opportunity to go through the same areas with both units.

All that being said if you pm me I can give you the contact for the people that are looking to sell my slightly used non-HD unit they are great people and would likely make you a good deal.

I have a rd218 connected to my E80 and I am more than happy with the performance. In the marina last weekend among all the moored boats I clearly picked up a radar return from two paddle boarders, buoys show up like a ocean liner. Remember if you radar is so sensitive to show a bird, it's highly likely to show very wave top as well. Most useful is MARPA tracking. Long range is not such a big deal, in the average sail boat the radar horizon is likely to be a max of about 18 miles. Yes I know land masses can be further, but my chart plotter works fine for that and remember if your radome is high up the mast the close range performance is likely to suffer.

Here's a spreadsheet with some different radome specs for comparison.

Excell Radar Comparison

Thanks for that update! Five years in storage and the Furuno 841 display has gone bad - so now in the market for a newer system -- and this helps cull the field!

I'll keep searching the forum for update ideas - unless someone wants to chime in and "help" empty my pockets!

Cheers - Jim

Jim:

I'm in the process of pulling older Furuno Navnet plotters and dome off my boat. Just wanted to do it before I faced your problem. Let me know if you would like any of it.

John - a very kind offer - but at this juncture - I'm thinking I'll opt for a new system - leaning towards the SITEX MDS-8 PC package. Sure, if the PC goes down-so does the radar/nav charting/AIS display/etc. Back to paper and DR! (maybe even break out the tables and Sextant)

Cheers - Jim
