Radar on tablet

Am interested in radar that can be displayed on a tablet in cockpit. Furuno sells the First Watch radar that displays on and can be controlled from an Ipad or Iphone. Has anyone accomplished this with OpenCPN and either of the radar plugins?

Does it require wifi?

Radar on tablet

I too am in the market for a new radar system. My reading on the Furuno WiFi setup has some problems:
1. iOS only -- but the possibility of emulating iOS on Android may not have data rates/throughput to be usable
2. iPad readability in daylight
3. Cost to migrate to iPad

I'm hoping to find a Radome that really links to an Android/PC system. I'm new to OpenCPN - but watching the the Garmin interface action. In fact, an Ethernet connection would be OK too.

Cheers - Jim

Re: Radar on tablet

Were about to replace all instrumentation with b&g. Their gofree wifi module allows replication of zeus2 screens on phone and tablets.

It's not a mandatory requirement for us as we plan to install a zeus2 at the helm and below.

Each vendors proprietary protocols make it less than simple to integrate their radar with opencpn.

Re: Radar on tablet

Thanks for that lead too. I've a carton full of N2K (Maretron) instrumentation - so opting for a full B&G set may not be useful for me.
I've found some info on the SiTex ethernet system:

SI-TEX MDS-8R Nobeltec TimeZero Radar Package

That it includes the TimeZero package is a big plus - but does that integrate with other setups? OpenCpn, Navionics, MaxSea, etc?

This from its features list:
  • A powerful, reliable and fully integrated PC radar solution ideal for a wide range of boats
  • Connects directly to your computer via Ethernet
  • No need for a dedicated multifunction display - just hook the MDS-8R to your onboard PC and navigate
  • Surpasses conventional radar performance by combining Nobeltec's state-of-the-art TimeZero charting and sophisticated navigation features with professional-grade SI-TEX radar functions
  • Your computer acts as the radar display and provides full control of all radar functions
    • Software will display the radar image
    • Gives you full control of the radar
    • Allows you to overlay the radar image right onto your charts
  • Numerous display setting options are available, including a split screen function - Displays radar on one half of computer screen, side by side with the navigation charts
  • Full integration with Nobeltec TimeZero software
  • MARPA for advanced target tracking network capabilities (requires heading sensor)
  • Chart overlay and stabilized radar presentation (requires heading sensor)
  • Displays on any size computer monitor
  • Dual monitors display possible
Might be an option I'll be researching some more.

Cheers - Jim
