Here is a good piece by Ben Ellison on Panbo about the Vesper Watchmate AIS filtering capability: Panbo: The Marine Electronics Hub: Vesper Marine WatchMate, still the leader in AIS collision avoidance?

Notice that the unit can apply filters to both the display, and to the alarms. I think this is what Evans is using, but the capabilities may not be familiar to everyone. Pretty powerful and well thought-out, but still not a solution to the particular problem Evans brought up in his original posting.

Which, I believe is the point of this post. I know it has that affect on me. I believe that overrides the "free security system" it affords you.

If seeing AIS targets affected me the same way they affect you, I would turn my AIS off, not ask others to turn their transceiver off.
