I just got a RPi 3 that I'd like to eventually use with OpenPlotter. I'm a complete Linux newbie and a Raspberry Pi newbie as well.

Can someone explain in simple terms what I'll get when I install the OpenPlotter image on my SD card? Is it a full Linux OS, plus OpenCPN, plus all the other OpenPlotter measurements/tweaks? Plus the other Raspbian packaged programs?

I.e. Will that OpenPlotter image also include, say, the Epiphany browser that comes with Raspbian Jessie? Or will I need to download and install that sort of thing separately?

There's Openplotter, the turnkey PI image aggregating Raspian, OpenCPN and some other open source stuff, and Openplotter, the unique software that is a code project on GitHub, that is part of the image. I almost wish they were named differently but here we speak of them as one thing.

Openplotter, the unique code, is GUI for KPlex, so you can multiplex existing NMEA 0183 sources, enable an AIS receiver using a dirt cheap software defined radio, and a GUI for adding super inexpensive temperature probes, compass, GPS, switches, to augment what your NMEA instruments collect with new data. It has a very flexible way to trigger actions based on various states. It can send emails and tweets. It is what puts the GPIO interface on your PI to work for you, among other things.

So it is certainly not just a cheap person's way to run OpenCPN, slowly (but getting faster!) It is your boat instrument data hub, your boat monitoring system, and increasingly, instrument display server and very usable chartplotter.

Great -- thanks for explaining to this poor dim newbie! I have managed to write the Raspbian Jessie image to my SD card and powered up the Raspberry Pi, have spent the afternoon poking around learning basic operation and features. Will eventually install OpenPlotter once the bugs have been worked out for RPi3.

My profound thanks to everyone involved in these coding projects. It's all magic to me.

Hi, how do I change my password?

I can log in via the "change password " link sent by email but in the change password page it asks for existing password, something I don't have yet?

Hi Openplotter fans,

I've a Rapberry Pi (1) running Openplotter. A bit slow but it works. A problem which I encounter is trying to figure out the USB port names which I have to enter in the NMEA settings dialog. Through a USB cable a hardware NMEA MUx (Shipmodul) is connected. Trying /dev/ttyUSB0 or /dev/ttyUSB01 does not show NMEA data through the 'inspector' dialog.

Any suggestions??

Hi,

I'm testing with a float switch. I executed the following steps:

1) wired the float switch to GND and GPIO 27
2) Enabled switch 1 with GPIO 27 and Pull up
3) added an action when switch 1 is on with a message

It works great.

what is the best way to close the message box when the float switch is back in the normal position?

Rainbow screen = under voltage / to small power supply. Before doing anything else, please switch to a proper power supply capable of 2,5A - the original power supply for the RIP 3 is excellent.

It seems that depending on the configuration, some images makes the PI to use more power than other images, especially images with the new opengl driver, and thereby toe PI will boot fine with some images with a bad power supply but not with images making the pi to have a higher power consumption.

Don't think this is my issue, as I had purchased from MCM Electronics: Home and Pro Audio/Video, Security and Test Equipment the more powerful one (2.5 amps) recommended for use with the Pi 3.

A quick flash of white then a boxed rainbow screen is normal on raspian, are you saying it is abnormal to have rainbow in openplotter?

Devices fromn Shipmodul are a little bit specials. I have to create udev rules to make them work inb OP. In theory OP should detect and mount your Shuipmodul devices.

what model are you trying to connect?
what devices shows the serial devices list when you try to create a serial input?

Setting an action "close all messages" for a "float switch 1 is off" trigger.
