Open Raymarine ST 4000MkII ?

When engaged it seems OK.

At least I think that is the model - There are not inscriptions, but it seem to match the manual. 1997. There is no clutch adjustment knob.

The manual says "open it", but I see no screws, and I am not inclined to start prying. Perhaps I am being thick.

They used to sell a kit that included a new belt, some lube and a little tool to pry the halves of the wheel apart. I think the right thickness of screwdriver should allow you to pry it apart pretty easily.

If it's working OK, why open it up?

OP is talking about an ST 4000, which uses a belt.

It has gotten noisy and catches when disengaged.

It happened rather suddenly, after reaching one of its stops and straining itself. I've got to say, I am rather disappointed at the autopilot designs that can damage themselves when they hit a steering stop. I had a tiller pilot that was prone to the same type of failure - damage from hitting a stop - and I find that design short coming disappointing. Very disappointing.

OK, very easy, very simple. Pries off easily, but I wasn't sure of that.

I had a belt (PO spares) and got it changed in a flash. Clean it up good, which should account for some of the drag.

Thanks for the help. Sure enough, the belt was simply stretched a bit in one spot - enough to cause trouble.

Do the belts come from Raymarine, or since it is out-of-production - elsewhere?
